  • Emissions: Zero on-site; indirect CO₂ tied to grid electricity

Overview

  • Use a cooling tower and condenser water loop to reject heat. 
  • Strengths: Higher efficiency (especially at large scale), better suited for hot climates and 24/7 loads. 
  • Challenges: Higher CAPEX, requires cooling tower maintenance, more complex installation. 
  • Best Use: Large commercial buildings, data centers, hospitals, industrial facilities.

  • Size Range: 100 – 2,000+ tons 
  • Efficiency (COP / kW/ton): COP 4.5–6.5 (0.55–0.78 kW/ton) 
  • CAPEX: $350 – $700/ton installed (plus cooling tower) 
  • OPEX: $0.04 – $0.08/kWh (lower energy cost, but add water treatment & tower maintenance) 
  • Emissions: Zero on-site; indirect CO₂ from grid electricity; water use impact

Overview 

  • High-capacity, water-cooled machines using centrifugal compressors. 
  • Strengths: Very high efficiency, large capacity (hundreds to thousands of tons). 
  • Challenges: Higher upfront cost, typically requires stable base load demand. 
  • Best Use: Utility plants, campuses, large data centers, district cooling.


Characteristics

  • Size Range: 300 – 5,000+ tons
  • Efficiency (COP / kW/ton): COP 6.0–7.5 (0.47–0.58 kW/ton) 
  • CAPEX: $500 – $900/ton installed 
  • OPEX: $0.035 – $0.06/kWh (very efficient, but higher maintenance costs at scale) 
  • Emissions: Zero on-site; indirect CO₂ from grid electricity; cooling tower water use

  • Use scroll compressors, available in air- or water-cooled designs.
